“This time it’s Different”

“Shelter in Place”
This was to be my anniversary blog. I was prepared to review some of the previous blogs that garnered praise, laughter and sometimes concern. However, in light of our current health pandemic, I would like to express my (two cents) thoughts.
Fact or fiction, I am sure we all have an opinion about the CoVid19 Pandemic of 2020. I welcome your thoughts and feelings on the subject. Please leave a comment.
As I watched a ‘YouTube’ video (posted below) Tuesday March 24, 2020 at 4:00 am, I wondered? Have I gotten caught up into the latest influenza pandemic hoopla? Is what I am hearing real? Have we all been asleep at the wheel? Am I, are we, to believe that the watchful eyes of the government let this one slip in on us? Where is, was, the CDC, FDA, WHO, NIH, FBI, CIA , okay I’m getting ridiculous. But, who knew and how long did they know? Is the siren we are hearing now our warning that it gets worse from here. Does shelter in place mean that we have no recourse and staying home is the remedy for now?
It’s been a week. All of those questions are being addressed by scientists, doctors and pundits. Each explanation leaves yet another question. How did it start, where did it start, who is at risk? To my amazement we now have identified the
animals responsible for this pandemic. Way to go. My Dad would say, “instead of complaining about mopping the floor, how about, let’s find out where the water is
coming from?
Well, as one with an inquiring mind, I decided to do some research on food and nutrition and stumbled upon this video. It is 58+minutes long, but I was captivated by the content. I hope you will be too. I recognized the voice of the narrator. Dr. Michael Greger was one of my instructors I followed as part of an online course I had taken almost three years ago. He was and is one of my favorite medical doctors, researchers, scientists and lecturer.
His demeanor is usually funny and informative. Today, as I listened, there was a somberness about Dr. Michael Greger’s lecture. He seemed concerned, yet determined in his delivery. His message is current, yet was presented in 2008! He said, “Shelter in Place”. As of last week, the town I live in has imposed an 8:00 pm curfew and we were told to ‘Shelter in Place’.
Dr. Greger begins by telling us that the two most important issues facing us in the future, climate change and a worldwide pandemic! He asks and then answers the question, “where do emerging diseases come from?” AIDS, SARS, Ebola, Hong Kung Flu, and other viruses. Dr. Greger charts the history of man and disease and explains how we developed: measles, whooping cough, influenza, small pox, and the common cold during the first 5 minutes of his talk. Our domestication of animals brings with it the diseases of those animals. He discusses three periods over the last 10,000 years that are classified below. He says, “prior to that time there were no notable diseases”.
- Diseases of Animal Domestication Render-pest viruses emerged like measles (cows, sheep). Pigs (whooping cough). Horses(Common Cold).
- Diseases of Civilization (Industrial Revolution) Diseases of Infection in the mid 20th Century. Diabetes, heart disease, etc. The development of Penicillin wiped out many of the infectious diseases of that time. The Age of Infectious disease was declared over in 1968 according to, Surgeon General, William Stewart.
- The “Age of Emerging Plagues”. Since 1975 there has been a steady emergence new infectious diseases. These viruses are responsible for of death of many Americans. There have been “30 new infectious diseases in 30 years!” 1975-2005, According to Dr. Greger, “Since 1981 the AIDS virus, has killed over 25 million.”
We are changing the ways that animals live. The animals and their predators have been displaced. Housing developments or on a greater scale the desolation the the rain forests force the animals to retreat and redefine their habitat. Our fascination with exotic birds brought us the West Nile Virus. The consumption of meats from the wilds of jungles has wrought new and emerging diseases the world has never seen.
Breeding practices of Factory Farms are causing new problems. Overuse of antibiotics for weight gain and commercial meat infections has created new dilemmas. Seventy to 80% of antibiotics are being used in the commercial meat industry. Those antibiotics may become ineffective on humans. The medical community has asked that these farmers reduce the use of these antibiotics. “Giving Healthy Livestock These Drugs Breeds Superbugs That Can Infect People”. See source below.
The hunting and harvesting of animals for human consumption may be the death of us. I’m Just Sayin’
What happens when flu viruses become highly contagious and deadly? Could this pandemic be the unnatural disaster of our own making?
